For those on a less frivolous budget but like the true boutique guesthouse experience, HanumanAlaya is the perfect place to stay in Siem Reap.
HanumanAlaya is full of character, and located just a short distance from the temples of Angkor on the outskirts of Siem Reap. From the lovingly restored wooden finishes, to the decoration in local antiques and handicrafts, this guesthouse offers truly wonderful Cambodian hospitality from both the owners and staff.
There are only 18 rooms, giving it a true guesthouse feel. Our recommendation is to book the Deluxe Rooms, offering a good size and nicely decorated. There are no exceptional views from the rooms and they have been fairly criticsied for lacking natural light, however with this style of guesthouse most guests enjoy spending time on the expansive cool balconies or by the pool.
In addition to the pool area, there is a spa offering traditional treatments and a herbal steam sauna, a bar and a restaurant, though eating out locally is also popular.
Our favourite part of Hanumanalaya is the spectacular antique shop, filled with a fascinating display of local antique artefacts and handicrafts.
This is our pick for budget stays in Siem Reap – a little out of town but full of character, exceptionally clean and wonderfully friendly and hospitable staff.
