Beijing

The Opposite House | $$$$
Character Boutique, Directors favourite hotels, Luxury, Modern Chic

This wonderful hotel is located in the heart of the sophisticated and cosmopolitan Beijing district of Sanlitun, just steps from some of the city’s finest and most vibrant shopping and nightlife areas home to Beijing’s first open plan shopping mall - The Village Sanlitun (North and South), and is home to both local and international designer boutiques and plenty of restaurants and cafes. By contrast, the embassy area just round the corner is lined with plenty of lush greenery, perfect for a relaxing walk or bike ride to escape the bustle of the urban jungle.

Opened in the summer of 2008, this striking Beijing luxury boutique hotel was designed by renowned Japanese architect Kengo Kuma with space, warmth, comfort, and style in mind. The exterior is a rather strange looking emerald glass box type structure but once through the doors the atmosphere changes and a cool chic look of modernity blended with tradition awaits.

The 99 guest studios, including nine suites and one Penthouse Duplex, are crafted from natural wood and at first appear strikingly simple and unadorned and it is only after a few minutes exploration you will fully realise the extent of simple luxury you find yourself in. All Studios come with signature wood flooring and floor heating, double vanities, deep-soaking oak tub, king-size bed with 400-thread-count Egyptian linen, iPod docking station, Denon entertainment system, LCD television, and bespoke natural Chinese bath essentials. WiFi and minibar replenished daily are complimentary.

Two restaurants and a mini club in the basement were conceived by celebrity chef restaurateur, David Laris, with hotel interiors designed by Neri + Hu. The eclectic Village Café serves hot food throughout the day, modern Mediterranean classics are found at Sureño and elegant and simple North Asian cuisine at Bei.

A fully equipped gym with free weights and techno-gym equipment, 22 meter stainless steel swimming pool, two massage treatment rooms, and a juice bar keep the disciplined on schedule.

The Opposite House is one of the most interesting hotels in Beijing. Its modern approach may not suit the more conservative traveller but in our opinion we find it to be one of the best hotels in the whole of China and a must for anyone who likes uber chic boutique luxury. Very highly recommended!
