Buddha Zen Hotel is located on Wenshufang “folk and custom street” and adjacent to the famous 1000 plus year old Wenshuyuan Buddhist Temple, where the guests can listen to Buddhist sermons and experience the ancient customs of the Chinese monks each day.
The area has recently been renovated to look like it may have done back in the heyday of the temple, it has achieved it quite well and is not as “Disneyland” like as other attempts at similar things in other cities. The pedestrianised area is full of small local restaurants and shops and is overall a really pleasant place to base your exploration of Chengdu from.
This hotel has just thirty five spacious and airy guestrooms which are stylishly decorated with mock antique furniture. In room facilities include air conditioning, hairdryers, telephone, en suite bathrooms, huge beds, great pillows and crisp linen, balcony, robes, slippers and min bar.
Rong Zhai Vegetarian Restaurant serves special regional Chinese dishes and this is complimented by the Jian Cha Tea House where the guests can have a casual chat with their family and friends.
There is also a small spa.
The staff are friendly and helpful and even though their English is not the best they will try to point you in the right direction for most things!
This small boutique hotel is certainly different to anything else in the city – most hotels frequented by Westerners are the huge soulless international chain hotels (where admittedly standards are higher) and it has lots of charm and character – something lacking elsewhere. The local area is full of pleasant surprises and good local food stalls and its great value for money.
