HOMA (Hotel of Modern Art) is located overlooking Guilin's famed emerald hills, in a 1000-acre park that is home to sculptures from acclaimed international artists. It is about 45 minutes from Guilin city and 50 minutes from the international airport.
The organic architecture of HOMA Chateau is a fascinating artistic innovation. Smoked glass windows, sloping roofs covered in grass, HOMA Chateau rises from the earth like a monolithic sculpture itself. Amid all the visual stimulation of the art park is a unique, elegant and extremely comfortable boutique hotel. Each of the 49 rooms and suites are of crisp modernist design, with all smooth surfaces and uber luxe fittings. Though no two rooms are the same, guests can expect plush linens, smooth surfaces, flatscreen TVs, and choice pieces of inspired artwork.
All the resort basics are covered as well, from pool and spa to great restaurants. From locally famous Chinese cuisine to Chef's specials and Western favorites, Lotus Restaurant offers a menu of creative Asian fusion where the menu focuses on the natural, using organic and local products where available. Lotus Restaurant also offers a whole host of alfresco dining options - by lakeside or among the pines, warmed by the sun or lit by the moon. Popular locations include Sun Lake beach, Frontier Prairie, the pine forest, and HOMA’s private karst cave.
And there’s plenty of outdoor activity beyond the expansive sculpture gardens — play golf, go for a raft trip down the Li River, take a hike through the surrounding countryside or a bicycle tour of the scenic Guangxi countryside. Or the more creative can partake in the many shorts courses on offer such as jewellery making, pottery, Chinese calligraphy, figurine painting or old style Chinese printing.
HOMA is an unusual resort – and probably not to everyone’s tastes. If you want to be in the heart of the city within easy walking distance of restaurants and historical sites it won’t be for you – BUT - if you want to get in touch with your artistic side, want a change from the monolithic soulless hotels or just get away from it all in picture postcard scenery in a boutique style hotel with a real point of difference we cannot recommend HOMA highly enough. Definitely one of our favourite hotels in China!
