Su He and Baisha Villages
Just a few miles from Lijiang are the Naxi tribal villages of Su He and Baisha. They offer a fascinating glimpse into the traditional Naxi lifestyle and your guide will explain to you all about local customs. The villages are each home to around a thousand farming families. In the local dialect Na means Black and Xi means Person and this comes from the respect that is shown for those that toil in the fields and have dark coloured skin.
We recommend a delightful walk (moderate grade) from Yufeng Monastery through the countryside to Baisha and then onto Su He Village which takes about 4 to 5 hours. Other side trips include a horse trek to Wenhai Village and Lake and then a hike back to Baisha. Without a doubt this is the best way to see more of the countryside and at Wenhai Lake one gets to experience local Naxi villages in a more remote and much less commercialized setting. For those that don't wish to walk there is a rough road so we can offer a drive back to town instead of the hike!
Tiger Leaping Gorge
Tiger Leaping Gorge measures 16km and has an awesome depth of 3,900 metres, making it one of the deepest gorges in the world. The mighty Yangtze (in this area aka Jinsha) River, squeezes between the Huba Mountains and the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. The Hutiao Gorge gets its name from an old Chinese legend that tells the story of a tiger that jumped across the gorge at its narrowest part (approximately 30 metres in width). A 2.5 hour drive from Lijiang to Qiaotou is followed by an hour’s walk to the mouth of the gorge. After lunch, explore the gorge before returning to Lijiang.
