This small simple hotel is located overlooking the banks of the Mekong River out towards Don Chan Island and is just a short tuk tuk ride to all the key tourist sites. It has the feel of walking in to a sparse but contemporary modern art gallery; it even refers to itself as an “Art Hotel”. Due to the location away from the main thoroughfare there is relatively little in the way of traffic noise, a rarity in this city!
All the reasonably sized 16 rooms are named after provinces of the country. They are fitted with contemporary furnishings, including tile floors and wrought iron bed frames. Some rooms afford panoramic views over the river. Just making your way to your room is part of the experience as each floor is uniquely colour coded in pastel shades of red, green or blue. Both the public areas and the rooms are decorated with Lao textiles and traditional art but displayed in a chic and stylish way. There is air-conditioning, a fan, cable TV and a minibar available in each room as well as free wireless internet!
The hotel is directly next door to the Spirit House restaurant, one of our regular haunts in the city, where you can relax with a selection of imported beers and wines and enjoy a great variety of both local and more familiar western favourites.
This small hotel offers great value in a quiet setting with many rooms having a wonderful view. The downsides are; that it is not suitable for all, due to the hard to navigate artistic spiral staircase and that there are not lots restaurants and bars directly on the doorstep - but don’t let that put you off - we think the Beau Rivage is a gem of a place!
