LAOS - Itinerary Ideas

Classic Laos - 11 days
Combining cities, river journeys, temples and hilltribes, this tour starts in the sleepy capital of Vientiane. After a couple of days exploring this relaxed city, fly up to the UNESCO World Heritage town of Luang Prabang, a picturesque riverside town full of temples, local markets and cafes. Heading north, you will leave Laos by a scenic two-day cruise up the Mekong River, stopping in a remote jungle lodge for the night, and finishing in the lush jungles of Golden Triangle region in Northern Thailand.

Fly from Australia to Bangkok and on to Vientiane.

Complete Laos - 15 days
This tour takes in the major highlights of Laos as well as giving you a flavour of some of the more off beat areas most other operators just don’t go to. Starting in Northern Thailand you cross in to Laos for a two day river journey down the mighty Mekong River en-route to Luang Prabang, the spiritual centre of the country. From here fly to the sleepy capital of Vientiane and then down to Southern Laos. The trip will culminate with a three-day cruise around the waterfalls and rural villages of the stunning 4,000 Islands region on a converted rice barge.

Day 1:
Fly from Australia to Bangkok and on to Chiang Rai.

Day 2:

Fly to Luang Prabang.

Full day exploring Luang Prabang’s beautiful temples and interesting museums.

Day 6:
Explore the Kuang Si waterfall and some of the surrounding countryside.

Day 7:
Full day at leisure to explore the local handicraft shops or markets.

Days 8-9:
Two-day river journey upstream along the Mekong staying overnight in the picturesque village of Pakbeng. Cross the border to Thailand and transfer to your hotel.

Day 10:
Full day exploring the Golden Triangle with its colourful hilltribes and lush mountain scenery.

Day 11:
Transfer to Chiang Rai Airport and fly back to Australia via Bangkok.

EXTENSIONS
From Bangkok it is easy to fly to any of Thailand’s beach resorts, our favourites include Koh Samui, Koh Chang and Krabi. Please discuss with you consultant as the weather in the beach areas of Thailand differs according to the season. You may also refer to the Thailand section of our website.

Day 9:
Fly to Pakse in Southern Laos and transfer to the nearby Bolavens Plateau.

Days 10-12:
Cruise aboard a converted rice barge in the Lao Mekong Delta. Visit the ancient ruins of Wat Phou, Papheng Waterfalls and some of the many Mekong River islands.

Days 13-14:
Using Khone Island as a base, explore the local area by boat trip heading and try to spot the rare Irrawaddy freshwater dolphins.

Day 15:
Cross back into Thailand by road and fly from Ubon Ratchathani to Bangkok and on to Australia.

EXTENSIONS
The temples of Angkor in Siem Reap make for a fantastic finale to this trip and can be reached by a short flight, either via Bangkok or directly from Pakse. The temples of Angkor make a splendid conclusion to the Khmer ruins and civilization you will have already visited in Laos. Alternatively, from Bangkok, you can easily head to the beaches of Southern Thailand for a few days relaxation before travelling home.
