The Far North
Kamu Lodge | $$$
Eco-friendly, Remote location
This unique eco property sited on the banks of the Mekong River is located in an area, that prior to its opening was, far from the tourist route. It is accessed by an enchanting three hour cruise upstream from Luang Prabang and surrounded by lush green mountains and paddy fields. The lodge has a commitment to responsible tourism by actively and positively effecting local lifestyles by alleviating poverty and preserving the local culture and traditions while imparting sustainable skills to the local people.
The Lodge features 20 private canvas tents set on elevated platforms looking out in to the surrounding greenery. Faithful to local style, each one is protected from the elements by a thatch roof. This allows the lodge grounds to harmoniously blend with surrounding nature and from a distance look more like a local village. The tents are decorated with bamboo and wooden furniture and whilst relatively Spartan have all the home comforts required. They each feature private attached bathroom and toilet and in keeping with its eco credentials the electricity and water heating are a product of solar energy.
The restaurant serves tasty and nutritious Lao cuisine using only the freshest locally sourced ingredients. Meals are set menus and as well as the Lao speciality dishes include a colourful array of organic tropical fruits and vegetables. If you have any dietary requirements please let Oasis know in advance.
For those who make the effort to reach the lodge there are a host of activities available to try first hand, most that are only experienced through a telephoto lens! You are actively encouraged to get your feet dirty with the locals and help out rice planting and harvesting in surrounding rice paddy’s, gold panning in the Mekong (Jan – Jun) and yes anything you find is yours to keep….or donate to the village…, trek to local waterfalls, fish for your supper and even learn Lao style archery!
Whilst not for everyone, Kamu Lodge will suit travellers looking for an exclusive and ecologically sound experience in a traditional and simple setting. The Lodge offers a peaceful and serene respite from hectic modern life as well as relaxing break mixed with activities if desired. The lodge is not suitable for less mobile clients as the grounds and activities, especially if it rains, can be quite slippery; you will get muddy! But that said, no level of fitness is required, just a sense of fun and an adventurous spirit.
