Bolaven Plateau
Tad Fane lodge | $
Remote location
Located on the Bolavens Plateau, in one of the most scenic spots in the region, the resort overlooks the spectacular Tad Fane waterfalls that thunder down in a 200 meter deep gorge. Beyond the waterfalls stretch the extensive jungle of Dong Hua Sao Conservation Area and the famous coffee growing plantations of the plateau.
The resort has a total of 14 comfortable rooms in bungalow-style houses. Tad Fane underwent extensive renovation in 2005, new roofs, ceilings, floor and furniture give the rooms a fresh and more spacious feel. The rooms all have a private bathroom with toilet and hot water shower. Air-conditioning is not necessary, as throughout the year the temperatures at night do not exceed 20 Celsius. Between July and October frequent rain (but usually not all day) brings the temperatures down even further, while in the cool season (November - January) they providing extra blankets, so remember to pack accordingly.
The restaurant with its unique 2-storey design, offers a fantastic view over the twin falls of Tad Fane. The menu consists of Lao, Thai and Western specialities. Vegetables and fish are bought fresh from the local market and many other comfort foods, not widely available in this area of Laos, are brought in from Thailand, including a selection of wine. Evenings are spent next to the fireplace in the bar chatting with fellow travellers and the staff.
Depending on your fitness levels and the season you can make several hikes, many trails simply start and end at the resort. There is the half day hike to the Dan Sin Xay Plateau, with beautiful rock formations, and unique vegetation of pine trees, moss and orchids or a half day walk leads to Tad Yeuang, a beautiful waterfall with good swimming opportunities. White water trips on the Champi River are possible between August and December, when the water level is at its highest. The resort is happy to arrange this through experienced and reputable specialists. Both white water rafting (min.5 persons) and kayaking is possible with prior arrangement through Oasis.
This small resort is a great stop off when heading to the remote southern regions of the country. The accommodation is simple but comfortable and the lush greenery of the setting is unbeatable. In the hot season it is also provides a welcome respite from the heat of the plains.
