Lao Spirit Resort (15 km from LP) | $$
Eco-friendly, Remote location
Reached by an interesting 45 minute drive from Luang Prabang the Lao Spirit Resort is located in an area of outstanding natural beauty. It is the first and only resort project that is based on eco-style bungalows and a historic house restoration philosophy.
Old houses from the French colonial era have been protected from destruction and were brought to the project for rebuilding and restoration. The houses have been carefully disassembled and rebuilt by experienced Laotian craftsmen on the Lao Spirit property - a wonderful way to give these antique, wooden houses a solid future.
The centre of the resort consists of three restored 100 year old Laotian-French style buildings. These are the restaurant, reception and a massage house. To keep the project afloat 5 bungalows have been added.
The five bungalows are built in a traditional style by local craftsmen and artists. They are constructed from wood and stone and the interiors are decorated with antique furniture that gives each bungalow a unique atmosphere. There are no electrical appliances like air conditioning or television to disturb the laid back natural atmosphere of the resort. Bathrooms with bathtub, open air shower and a large terrace facing the river offer peace and relaxation to the guest. The main selling point of the bungalows is the terraces with views out to the jungle, nearby river and wonderful mountain scenery.
The restaurant serves a well chosen selected menu of Asian and European specialties. However, the main reasons to stay at this wonderful lodge are the activities; these include kayaking the Nam Khan River and hiking to nearby waterfalls. You can also use the resort as a base for mountain bike excursions, BUT the main draw is the elephant camp. You can even watch the magnificent beasts taking their morning bath from the restaurant veranda! Elephant treks in to the surrounding jungle can easily be arranged.
The elephants are kept in this remote spot as part of the Elephant Park Project whose main purpose is to give ex logging elephants a new future away from that brutal way of life. Since 2003 five elephants have been freed from logging work and given a new home in the park and experienced mahouts and vets help the elephants adapt to their new environment. The project is funded only by tourist visits, so your stay here is vital to the elephant’s survival. The project has grand plans for expansion in the future, all of which we will let them tell you about!
Oasis Travel just loves this place. The setting is stunning, the accommodation is out of this world and it’s all in aid of a noble cause close to our hearts - namely conserving local culture and heritage, supporting community projects benefiting local people and initiatives, and to lessen the negative environmental impacts of tourism as well as looking after elephants.
This is just one of the hotels that we recommend in this area. If your favourite is not featured just let your consultant know - we will be happy to book it for you!
