The far northern province of Luang Nam Tha is little visited by tourists and whilst it’s far from being the easiest place to get to the effort is well worth rewarded. Perched on the banks of the Nam Tha River, just 6km from the village of the same name is the extraordinary Boat Landing Guesthouse. It can be accessed from Houey Xay, but only using the rather dangerous speed boats, or by the longer but more sedate slow boat from Luang Prabang. This trip is not for the faint hearted, just remember - the journey is part of the whole experience! We use this guesthouse as the start and end point for the Akha Experience trek.
The charming but basic bamboo and wooden bungalows are scattered throughout lush tropical gardens and each is fan cooled and has a veranda with stunning river views. Electricity is generated by solar panels.
The open veranda restaurant serves northern Lao cuisine and includes tastes and flavours that you may not find on any other menu. Here you can sample the traditional dishes of the people of Luang Nam Tha. They also have an extensive vegetarian menu.
If you don’t think the Akha Experience is for you, sleeping in shared dorms is certainly not appropriate for all, it is possible to use Boat Landing as a base to explore the nearby Nam Ha National Park and take excursions in to the surrounding villages, go fishing with locals, take cycling trips or go kayaking or rafting.
This area of Laos is only for the more intrepid experienced traveller. Getting to and from your destination is all part of the journey, expect cancellations and/or delays as travel in this remote area rarely goes according to plan. This is where booking with experts such as Oasis comes in to its own; if things do go wrong our experienced guides always have a back up plan and please be rest assured you will not be left to fend for yourselves!
