Borneo is best known for its wildlife, but it is also home to a fascinating array of indigenous cultures and one of the best places to explore this is in the Batang Ai region of Sarawak. In the past you had to stay with locals or in substandard B&B’s but nowadays, set on the outskirts of spectacular rainforest, you will find the Hilton Batang Ai Longhouse Resort - Hilton’s only jungle property. The actual national park is an exciting 2-hour boat ride away, but this resort makes for a perfect luxury base from where to explore. The hotel is accessed by a four hour plus drive from Kuching to the reception jetty and then a short boat ride takes you to the hotel.

The resort, built in the traditional longhouse style, from the fist view is stunning. However, the rooms are a little small and in need of some TLC, but when you consider where the resort is located – in the middle of a rainforest – you have to be forgiving. Each room comes complete with air-conditioning and tea and coffee making facilities.

The restaurant serves both western and local fare and is of reasonable quality. There is a bar area to relax in before and after diner. The swimming pool is a welcome sight after jungle trekking as is the spa. There is plenty to keep you occupied whilst staying here including organised trips to waterfalls, jungle walks and visits to traditional tribal longhouses. On site facilities include a jogging track, tennis court and swimming pool.

If exploring the local culture and national parks of Sarawak, and requiring comfortable lodging, is on your agenda the Hilton makes for an excellent base. The rooms are a little small and dated, and can at times seem a little musty, but this is because it is in the middle of the rainforest. It is not 5 star luxury but considering the location, and the fact it is under the Hilton brand, it is certainly the very best available.
