The Bon Ton Resort is a firm favourite of Oasis Travel as it is atmospheric, relaxing and one of the most unique properties we feature. This Australian owned resort is set in a mature coconut plantation, on the edge of a lagoon just a few minutes walk from Pantai Cenang – Langkawi’s longest beach. The resort comprises just 8 unique antique houses, or “kampung”, purchased from local islanders. They have each been lovingly restored back to their original grandeur and are full of unsurpassed character and charm. They range in age from 80 to 120 years old!
Each of the 8 wood built “kampung” is individually designed and set on stilts in the traditional Malay style facing the picturesque lagoon and swimming pool. The interiors are bright and colourful and decorated with traditional textiles and wooden antiques. They have been brought in to the 21st century with the addition of luxury bathrooms (some in an outdoor setting), air-conditioning, ceiling fans and TV and DVD/CD players (on request). Internet access is free of charge in the main building. Each “kampung” features a veranda and all but one has a four poster bed. Four of the kampung sleep 2 people, whilst the other four can sleep between 3 and 6.
Overlooking the lagoon is the open sided Nam Restaurant, which has gained a reputation for being amongst the very best on the island and serves an exotic fusion of western and eastern gourmet cuisine. Be sure to book your favourite table as the restaurant is very popular, especially in the high season. The wine list is first class and with Langkawi being duty free is also great value. For pre dinner drinks in the most stylish bar on Langkawi try the Chin Chin Bar, a chic converted antique Chinese shophouse strewn with antiques or alternatively a cocktail or two on the Sunset Deck.
Due to the small size of the resort other facilities associated with large resorts are lacking but the swimming pool is adequate and there is even an antique yacht available for charter.
In our opinion Bon Ton is one of the best resorts in Malaysia and possibly one of our favourites in the whole of Southeast Asia! Its only draw back is its location; you are roughly a mile away from the beach, accessed via a sandy pathway but the resort does have a beach drop off service available. The owner also runs a rescue centre for cats and dogs in a nearby compound and whilst the animals do not run free in the resort it is worth taking note of this if you suffer from allergies.
We at Oasis Travel just love this resort as it is full of character, ambience and history – these attributes coupled with fine food and great service make it one of our top recommendations.
