The interesting history of the Lone Pine dates back to 1948 when a single bungalow was bought a group of Chinese entrepreneurs with the intention of operating a family-run hotel on Batu Ferringhi beach. On the land where the bungalow stood, was then a lone Casuarina tree, which was mistakenly thought to be a pine tree, hence the hotel's name 'Lone Pine. Much of the old world charm of the original hotel has been retained.
Having gone through phases of development through the years, Lone Pine today is a 3 storey building with 50 guestrooms. Almost all rooms face the sea and open out to a terrace, balcony or private courtyard. Guest rooms are attentively furnished and boast luxurious space with modern amenities such as air-conditioning, refrigerators and cable television. Admittedly the rooms are again in need of renovation or at least a lick of paint, but the shabbiness kind of adds to the hotels charm and the public areas are all very well kept. The garden and the swimming pool are a wonderful haven from the highly active beach.
If its solitude and pure relaxation in luxury you’re looking for then neither Lone Pine nor Batu Ferringhi are for you. But if you like to be in the heart of the beach action, near the water sports and close to an abundance of bars and restaurants all whilst staying in a good value, charming, unpretentious smaller hotel with exceptional service then the Lone Pine is an excellent choice!
