Located in the heart of the city and originally built in 1901by the famed Sarkies Brothers, The Strand Hotel espouses all that was wondrous and opulent in a bygone era. Restored to its former glory, the Victorian-style combines the charms of the 1920s and 1930s with lavish modern-day amenities.
The hotel's 32 beautifully appointed suites are the essence of timeless elegance, and boast high ceilings; teakwood floors, spacious bedrooms and luxurious bathrooms. A private collection of local art pieces and antiques evokes a sense of nostalgia. The rooms include satellite TV, personal safe, minibar and 24 hour butler service.
There are 4 dining and drinking options to choose from that include The Strand Café, with its large teak-framed windows, stylish chandeliers, floors of tile and teak and rattan furnishings that create an intimate dining atmosphere reminiscent of the hotel’s historical charm. The menu features Burmese and Western cuisine. The Strand Grill has a lavish dining room with a vaulted ceiling, skylights, chandeliers and an exquisite menu focusing on the chef’s extraordinary culinary creations. There is also the Strand Bar and the marvellous lobby lounge.
Although lacking a swimming pool and the obligatory spa The Strand still rates as one of our favourite places to stay in the whole of Asia. The atmosphere is quite special; you really can imagine you have been transported back in time to a bygone era. The service is top quality as are the rooms – the whole experience of staying at The Strand is well worth the extra cost!
