Classic Burma
This itinerary covers the basic “must see” highlights for first time visitors to the country, including the splendid temples of Bagan, the ancient capitals surrounding Mandalay, a colonial hill station and the peaceful and relaxing ambience of Inle Lake. The Burma Road - less travelled
If you have been to Myanmar before and wish to explore this wonderful country further, and don’t mind putting up with some rather basic accommodation at times, the below itinerary could just be for you! The highlights are atmospheric Moulmein, the Golden Rock and the eerie temples of Maruk-U. Learn more>>

Accommodation options at all the destinations are of good quality.
Day 1
Fly from Australia to Bangkok and on to Yangon.
Day 2
Arrive in Yangon and transfer to your hotel. The rest of the day is at leisure.
Day 3
Today take the local ferry to Twante, a small village famous for its pottery.
Day 4
Full day tour of Yangon, including a visit to the awe-inspiring Shwedagon Pagoda.
Days 5-6
Fly to Bagan to explore the hundreds of temples that are scattered along the banks of the Irrawaddy River. (Optional hotair balloon ride at dawn or dusk)
Day 7
Fly to Mandalay and drive to the cooler climbs of the hill station of Pyin Oo Lwin.
Day 8
Morning tour of the botanical garden by pony and trap before returning to Mandalay in time for sunset from Mandalay Hill.
Days 9-10
Two full days to explore the many wonders in Mandalay and the nearby ancient capital cities in the area.
Days 11-12
Fly to Heho and transfer to the serene Inle Lake. Spend your time at the lake exploring the tribal villages and bizarre floating attractions around the lake.
Day 13
Fly to Yangon and then back to Australia via Bangkok.
Extensions
There are many ways to extend this Myanmar itinerary such as travelling between Bagan and Mandalay on a luxury Pandaw cruise, or by road stopping at the weird and wonderful Mt Popa. Surprisingly to some people, Burma has some wonderful beaches with excellent accommodation! Adding a few days at Ngapali or Ngwe Saung beach resorts is easily done. Alternatively you may wish to head to a Thai beach of your choice.

Fly from Australia to Thailand.
Day 2
Arrive in Yangon and transfer to your hotel. The rest of the day is at leisure.
Day 3
Full day to exploring Yangon, including the Shwedagon Pagoda.
Day 4
Drive to the Golden Rock, a giant gold leaf clad boulder perched on a precipice, which has become one of the country’s most important Buddhist sites.
Days 5-6
Continue the drive south to the atmospheric city of Moulmein, stopping in rarely visited villages en route. Here you will visit Kipling’s Pagoda and explore the distinctive colonial heritage buildings.
Day 7
Return to Yangon by road.
Day 8
Fly to Sittwe, then take a boat on to the ancient deserted city of Mrauk U.
Day 9
Full day exploring the temples and surrounds of Mrauk U.
Day 10
Today you may wish to venture a little further afield from Mrauk U to visit the ancient capital of Wethali.
Day 11
Return to Sittwe by boat.
Day 12
Fly back to Yangon.
Day 13
Return to Australia via Bangkok.
Extensions
A few days at a luxury lodge in the Himalayan foothills of Putao is a popular add on to this very unique itinerary. Alternatively you may prefer a few days on the beach in either eastern Myanmar or possibly one of the superb Thai beaches.
