Singapore is easy to explore without the services of a driver and guide, although we would recommend at half day orientation tour when your guide can explain a little about the various cultural areas and give you the benefit of some local knowledge when it comes to trying the local restaurants. We would also recommend that if you would like to go on the night safari, you pre book as this very popular excursion is sometimes sold out in advance, but apart from the above Singapore is easy to navigate, taxis and public transport are frequent, cheap and safe. Should you get lost or stuck English is also very widely spoken and the local people are extremely friendly and polite. Some possibilities you may want to explore under your own steam are listed below.
- Take English style afternoon tea at the world famous Raffles Hotel.
- Feast on the famous Black Pepper Crab at Eng Seng Restaurant off Joo Chiat Road. But expect to queue for up to an hour at this ever popular restaurant!
- Try foot reflexology – a natural health method practiced by the ancient Chinese, where the reflex zones (nerve endings) in the feet are massaged to normalise the function of the body's internal organs – there are nearly 200 reflexology establishments on the island!
- Visit the multi-media brand entertainment centre specially dedicated to tracing the illustrious rise of Singapore's very own Tiger beer.
- Visit the sombre World War 2 such as the Changi Chapel and Museum.
- If it’s raining or you are in the mood for some hands on entertainment try the Singapore Discovery Centre. It is full of interesting interactive exhibits spread over 5 main galleries around 8 different themes.
- Go shopping along Orchard Road - here you will find just about everything from the latest fashions and designer gadgets to local Chinese medicines. (A major re-development and upgrade of Orchard Road is underway and expected completion date is April 2009 – some disruption to transport will be inevitable).
- Visit Little India, the focal point of Singapore's large Indian community. Its spice-scented streets beckon you to a profusion of ethnic jewellery, jasmine garlands and colourful silk saris.
- Visit one of the many interesting museums.
- Check out the waterside entertainment areas of Boat, Robertson and Clarke Quays.
- Drip feed yourself a cocktail whilst sitting in a wheelchair at the trendy but bizarre “The Clinic” bar.
