The Arun Residence | $$$

The owner says she was stunned by the view when she came across the dilapidated Thai-style house that is now Arun Residence. And with its outlook across the Chao Phraya River to the Temple of the Dawn (Wat Arun) it’s easy to see why! This is a recently renovated historic Sino-Portuguese river house set against the exotic vista of seventeenth century classic Thai architecture and it is difficult to convey just how special this gem of a guesthouse is in words.
The five rooms are cosy and rustic decorated in burnt yellow, white and natural wood. There are three styles of room, 3 with split level living and sleeping quarters (with quite steep steps to the mezzanine bedroom); one single level twin room and the Arun Suite; an attic suite with a spacious balcony and sublime views across to the temple.

Arun Residence is perfectly located for first time visitors to Bangkok who like to explore on their own, as it is within walking distance of the Grand Palace, Wat Po and the famous Bangkok flower market (Pak Klong Talat). The only draw back of the location is that as with other small riverside guesthouses it can be a little noisy, especially early in the morning as life on the river begins around 05.30.
If soaking up the unique atmosphere of Bangkok is high on your agenda, you really don’t like the high-rise international chain hotels and yet you demand comfort and service the Arun Residence fits your brief to the letter! Whilst lacking in the facilities of the bigger properties the personal service and location more than compensate, just don’t tell anyone as the five rooms get booked up well in advance already!
