The Eugenia | $$$
Character Boutique, Historic Hotel
Step away from the frantic pace of Bangkok life into this late 19th century residence and you forget in moments that you are in fact still in one the busiest areas of the city! The Eugenia, until recently a private abode, offers just 12 individually appointed luxurious suites that feature four-poster beds and a host of beautiful Asian antiques. Such is the detail that even the light switches and light fittings are of a bygone era. The period decoration even extends to the bathtubs that are made of hand-beaten copper and aluminium-alloy.
There are just 12 high ceilinged opulently decorated suites that are divided in to 4 categories. Each comes complete with antique furniture and period fittings and decorations throughout. The furniture has been part of an eclectic private collection of the owner and his family sourced over time from colonial Burma, India and Indochina. All the pure white bed linen that accompanies the feather pillows and duvets is imported from Belgium.
The Eugenia Suite, 42 sqm
The Sawadee Suite, 34 sqm
The Wattana Suite, 34 sqm
The Siam Suite, 22 sqm
In our opinion it is well worth the minimal extra expense and booking one of the larger suites.
Breakfast, daily afternoon tea and all day light meals are served in the Zheng He Lounge named after the great Chinese voyager Admiral Zheng He who covered much of the world long before anyone from the West. Fine dining is available at the D.B. Bradley Dining Room where east meets west fusion delicacies are served with attention to the utmost detail for both lunch & dinner. The restaurant is named after a Christian missionary who was a doctor, health officer, newspaperman, and advisor to a previous king; he was the first western physician to enter Siam as a missionary in 1835.
To the rear of the hotel is a charming little court yard and garden complete with a swimming pool and Thai sala, the perfect little hideaway. The hotel is just a 15 minute walk to the Skytrain and busy shopping and entertainment areas on Sukhumvit Road. To complete the experience the hotel can provide airport transfers in one of their vintage cars, they have 6 in all including a classic Daimler Limousine and Mercedes Ponton 190. And for those wishing to do their sightseeing around Bangkok in style, these cars can also be hired by the day!
The interior design is quirky with many artefacts from the 19th century but also features some animal skins and mounted hunting trophies that may not be to everyone’s taste. In keeping with the period design, The Eugenia does not have a lift to the upper floors and some of the Siam suites are a little small but all said and done this is our favourite alternative to the larger hotels and an experience we’re sure you will want to repeat if you are ever in Bangkok again!
Unfortunately the hotel is not suitable for young children.
This is just one of the hotels that we recommend in this area. If your favourite is not featured just let your consultant know - we will be happy to book it for you!
