Hin Tok River Camp @ Hell Fire Pass | $$

Just over a couple of hours drive from Bangkok towards the Burmese border is the splendid Hin Tok tented camp. Situated on a stunning riverside facing the green mountains, the camp is set on the site of a WW2 Japanese military base overlooking the infamous River Kwai. There is an easy to follow walking trail from the Hell Fire Pass Museum that leads back to the camp where you can see first hand evidence of the inconceivable work the allied POW’s were forced to undertake.

The actual tents are similar in style to African safari tents and are all large, 26 sqm, and each comes complete with rattan furniture, comfortable queen-size beds, refrigerator, air-conditioning and en suite facilities with hot showers. Each also has a private covered veranda with deck chairs to relax on.

There is a partially covered restaurant serving both Thai and Western food and a cocktail bar. Around the evening campfire is the place to chill out in the evenings with entertainment provided by some of the nearby tribesmen and women and occasionally by the guests themselves. There is also a natural spring water pool just adjacent to the River Kwai Noi, from where you can take in the magnificent sunset views while you are relaxing in the pool. The resort has free mountain bikes on offer and can arrange a multitude of exciting day trips including kayaking, bamboo rafting, visits to local tribal villages and exploring nearby caves.

This camp is the Oasis Travel favourite in this area. There are other alternatives such as the Floating Jungle Rafts if staying in a tent is not for you. We can also combine your stay so you have a night in each but we recommend these tents because the location is excellent, there are less mosquito's and, in our humble opinion, the overall experience is superior.
