Koh Chang
The stunning island of Koh Chang (Elephant Island) is so called, not because it is home to elephants, but because from a distance it is said to look like and elephant. Just a short flight and local ferry journey from Bangkok, or a pleasant 4 hour road journey plus the ferry, it is the most accessible island retreat from the capital. The island was until recently a well kept secret and only frequented by a limited number of backpackers but now there are a couple of fine resorts on Koh Chang itself and others dotted about on the 47 other islands that make up the Koh Chang Marine Park.
The islands here are far less developed than any of the others in the Gulf and make the perfect get away destination for those looking for something a little bit different from the well known areas such as Koh Samui or Phuket. The island is becoming more popular year on year and the infrastructure and restaurant scene developing quickly. The mountains and jungle make it an ideal place for trekking or mountain biking and the isolated beaches are perfect for sun worshippers. Our tip, get there in the next couple of years before it gets overdeveloped.
