Chiang Mai
The Rachamankha | $$$
Character Boutique, Honeymoon
Located within the walls of the old quarter of Chiang Mai, this stylish, intimate retreat is laid out over a sequence of courtyards, bordered by carefully tendered frangipani trees and flowing bougainvillea. Many of Chiang Mai’s most important temples are within walking distance. The hotel was designed by its owner, the Thai architect Rooj Changtrakul and based on Thai temples of the 13th and 14th century with all the rooms are decorated with Lanna art from the region and Chinese antiquities.
The Rachamankha has just 18 Superior rooms, 4 slightly larger deluxe rooms and 2 enormous two-Bedroom Suite. Each room is slightly different due to the fact that each is individually decorated with genuine antique furniture and each piece is unique. The window blinds are made from bamboo and reeds are used to make the colourful floor matting. Chinese porcelain table lamps are complemented by local style lanterns and antique wardrobes. The tiled bathrooms are a touch on the small side but more than adequate and are stocked with shampoos and soaps from Juku, a quality local Thai brand.
Each room has;
- Air-conditioning
- Hair dryer
- Robes and slippers
- Satellite TV
- In room safe deposit box
- Hi speed wireless internet access
The restaurant is beautifully decorated with old paintings depicting the life of Buddha and is lined with antique Chinese tables and exquisite Ming Dynasty plates. The focus of the cuisine is Thai but there are also a large selection of fusion dishes that combine ingredients, sauces and flavours from Thailand, Vietnam, Japan, and Europe. Room service is available but with a dining room so grand why would you bother?
There is a 20 meter swimming pool with a broad stone deck complete with comfortable sun loungers and large umbrellas all serviced by an outdoor pool bar. The top floor of the two-story pool house is used for massages. For guests wanting a more complete spa package the hotel arranges for a car to take guests to Baan Saen Doi, approximately 20 minutes away.
Our favourite place in the hotel is the library and Internet room, a sanctuary lined with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves crammed with architecture and art books. The books can be read in the library or in your room on request. Definitely one of the most stylish places to stay in Chiang Mai.
This is just one of the hotels that we recommend in this area. If your favourite is not featured just let your consultant know - we will be happy to book it for you!
