Mae Hong Son
On the far north western point of Thailand, on the Burmese border is the sleepy town of Mae Hong Son, accessed by a short flight or attractive drive through stunning scenery from Chiang Mai. Mae Hong Son is best known for its landscape and culture. The people of Mae Hong Son are made up of Shan tribe who live in the city and the various hilltribe peoples who live in remote villages on mountain tops where their lifestyle has changed little in hundreds of years. The town has gained the nickname “the city of three mists” as it is shrouded in a mysterious mist most of the year which adds to the unique ambience of the town.
The remoteness of the area makes it wonderful for trekking as it is far away from the crowds that trek near Chiang Mai. It is also possible to do white water rafting expeditions here.
