There are several hotels options nearer to the centre of Mae Hong Son, but Oasis Travel much prefer this little gem of an eco-resort located eight kilometres away. The Fern Resort is a project built with support and funds from the government where special finance has been established to support the development of rural areas and assist in employment and education for the locals. Fern Resort has a policy of employing only local people; most of them are of Karen ethnicity from nearby villages.

There are 30 “Shan” style rooms dotted around the lush resort grounds, which blend in perfectly with the surrounding forest and rice fields. The rooms are pretty basic but more than adequate and all have air-conditioning, private balconies and en suite facilities. There are no televisions or telephones just the surrounding natural beauty to keep you entertained.

The restaurant serves local and regional Thai food prepared from ingredients only purchased at local markets, thus helping the wider community, plus a few European dishes as well. Please bare in mind that this is a remote area and English is not even the third or fourth language let alone second and service can be at the locals pace, but this is the beauty of being in this area, there really is nothing to rush for! The resort runs a free shuttle bus runs into the town and can also arrange trekking and other excursions for you.

Fern Resort is a wonderful remote escape that will show you another side to Thai life, nothing like the commercial aspects of both Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai. Granted you do have to give up a few home comforts but overall we heartily recommend this little eco-aware resort for the traveller looking to genuinely connect with the local culture in a relaxed and natural setting.
