Koh Lanta has long been a well kept backpackers secret in the same way Pimalai Resort and Spa has been a little known luxury retreat. However, with the arrival of a few more better quality resorts the secret is out. Pimalai was the first upmarket resort to open and is still widely regarded as the bench mark level its competition is trying to match. Being the first they had the pick of locations and the 900 meter white sand deserted bay is simply stunning! The resort is generally accessed by its own luxury speedboat and as you pull in to the bay it is hard to believe there is a resort hidden amongst the greenery.
The rooms and suites are set in 100 acres of thriving tropical gardens. Each of the 121 Thai-style rooms and new pool villas are large, airy, elegant and very restful but not very individual, the design is contemporary but not original. That said however, the resort still fits its luxury billing and will please even the most discerning clientele. All come equipped with the expected 5 star amenities such as high speed internet and DVD players.
Higher up the hillside, each with ocean views, are the newer Pool Villas which are ideal for those looking for total privacy. They represent a resort within the resort and with private infinity pools, sunbathing decks and private spa salas will really make you think twice about heading out anywhere! You can even have your own chef prepare your diner in your own private kitchen! Although positioned on rather a steep hillside just call for the golf buggy if you want to get to the dramatic infinity pool or restaurant.

The 5 restaurants and bars can make deciding where to eat quite a challenge, there are options beachside, poolside and hillside, so no matter which accommodation you choose you will never be far from refreshments! You will find food to suit all tastes but if you want a break from dining in the luxurious restaurants just wander down to the beach where just a few 100 meters away are a couple of locally owned beach bars that serve authentic Thai food.
Other facilities include 2 superb huge infinity edge swimming pools, windsurfing, kayaking (no motorised water sports are allowed on Koh Lanta), Thai cooking school, sports centre featuring basketball and badminton courts and 2 floodlit tennis courts. Elephant rides, jungle trekking, cycling and snorkelling are all available nearby. Koh Lanta is well positioned to give access to some of Thailand’s best dive sights and the resort has its own PADI centre and 20 meter luxury dive boat. The sumptuous Pimalai Spa is also one the main factors for staying at the resort. Everyone really should try one of the fabulous authentic treatments on offer or at very least the free herbal sauna!
The remote location complimented many activities on offer make Pimalai ideal for anyone looking for an idyllic beach escape with plenty on hand if just chilling out the whole time is not your thing. The isolation of the resort means that most guests are tucked up in bed by 11pm so anyone looking for nightlife is better sticking to Phuket. We thought 3 or 4 days would be the ideal time to spend here but from experience we can tell you no matter how long you stay you will never be quite ready to leave this enchanting spot!
