Koh Lanta & Koh Jum
Koh Jum Lodge | $$
Eco-friendly, Remote location
This eco friendly lodge is situated on the island of Koh Jum, between Krabi, Lanta and Phi Phi islands in the area referred as Andaman Triangle or Turquoise Triangle. Koh Jum as a whole is unspoiled and sparsely populated. There are just three small fishing villages with a total population under 1000 inhabitants. The lodge is located on a twelve kilometre stretch of untouched sandy beach, fringed by coconut trees. The island is inhabited by a variety of wildlife including monkeys, sea eagles, large lizards. The facilities on the island remain basic, it has just one small dirt road and no electricity supplied from the mainland. Consequently there has not been any commercial large-scale tourism development on the island but that is the key attraction to most visitors to Koh Jum!
Lodge is composed of sixteen wooden cottages designed in traditional architectural style and set within a coconut palm plantation and tropical garden setting. All cottages are located near the beach, facing across the sea to the awe inspiring Phi Phi Islands. The cottages are extremely spacious and decorated with local materials such as bamboo, rattan, cotton and silk and all are equipped with a large king size bed with mosquito net, a large living area with sofa and arm chair, a bathroom and a large terrace with sea facing hammock. All the cottages are individually equipped to provide sufficient energy for electric fan and lighting.
The main complex is made up of two large locally styled buildings with a reception and lobby area with a library stocked with books, in-door games and large TV/DVD screen. The restaurant has panoramic views of the ocean and serves locally caught sea food as well as Thai and Mediterranean cuisine. There is also a tropical beach bar and a swimming pool. In the garden there are “Salas” for afternoon naps and traditional massages, a “pétanque” and volley ball area. Capitalizing on the excellent marine environment Koh Jum Lodge can organize snorkelling trips to Bamboo Island, Phi Phi Island, canoeing, fishing and inland hiking tours. Scuba diving can be proposed through Phi Phi Island, Krabi or Koh Lanta diving operators.
The most convenient way to access Koh Jum is via Krabi Airport, then a short drive to the pier for the boat journey to the island followed by a fifteen minute transfer to the resort. Sounds complicated but the effort is well worth it! This small intimate lodge exists at one with nature and is one of this areas last remaining truly exotic island hideaways. It is not the most luxurious in terms of fixtures and fittings but if it’s remote tropical escape you want, a few days on Koh Jum will rejuvenate mind body and soul.
Note; the resort is closed in the low season between 01 Jun and 30 Sep.
