There are so many highlights in this fascinating country that it is impossible to list them all here. Our travel consultants will discuss your interests and be able to put a specific itinerary together for you, but below are a few must seeās!
El Chalten & Fitzroy
Mount Fitzroy has long been the iconic peak of Argentina yet the small unassuming, frontier village of el Chalten offers a wonderful slice of Patagonia. The scenery is truly breathtaking ā huge, granite peaks loom high over raging rivers, turquoise lakes and the great southern icefield beyond though it is access to the mountains and dizzying viewpoints that makes the village so special. For walkers, trails lead off into the massif in all directions while travel a short distance by road and the captivating views of Mount Fitzroy change with every metre you take. Further still, awake early and catch sunrise paint the granite towers a deep red in colour, truly magical!
Cafayate and Cachi
Red rock canyons, eerie rock formations and multi-coloured mountains, need we say more!? South of Salta, Argentinaās iconic āRuta 40ā highway showcases the very best of the northwest highlands and culminates in the rolling vineyards of Cafayate, home to some of Argentinaās finest āTorrontesā white wine. Throughout, picture-postcard colonial villages offer rustic yet charming boutique hotels while in the countryside, charming family-run āfincasā (traditional farmhouses) have thrown open their doors to tourism. For the adventurous, this is self-drive country; the roads are long, wide and empty and around every corner there is something new to discover.
Iguazu
The mighty Iguazu Falls are known the world over and rightly so – they are mesmerising, one of South Americaās true natural wonders that never fails to impress. The traditional view, however, is to allow two nights maximum to enjoy the falls from both the Argentine and Brazilian side of the border though here at Oasis Travel, we believe that this overlooks one important detail. The surrounding subtropical jungle, remnants of the great interior Atlantic rainforest that covered much of the continent, teems with wildlife, jaguar among them, including some 350-400 species of birds alone. There are excellent trails throughout the national park and spending longer at the falls or in one of the nearby wildlife lodges will add a unique dimension to any visit. Highly recommended!
Ibera Wetlands
Overlooked and unloved, the great Ibera wetlands are often hot, sticky and uninviting and yet for nature enthusiasts, they should be one of the first destinations down for any trip to Argentina. The wildlife is simply extraordinary, second only to the Pantanal in South America, and home to a dazzling array of flora and fauna including pampa deer, capybara, caiman, river otters, maned wolf and over 300 species of birds. Better still, there are now excellent lodges which have opened up offering unique access by boat, foot or horse into the surrounding marsh, savannah and lagoons accompanied by expert naturalist guides. Access to Ibera is still uncomfortable, often involving long and bumpy journeys, yet allow enough time at the lodge and the experience will be unforgettable!
