Brazil - Oasis Highlights

There are so many highlights in this fascinating country that it is impossible to list them all here. Our travel consultants will discuss your interests and be able to put a specific itinerary together for you, but below are a few must seeā€™s!

Paraty & Ilha Grande

You donā€™t need to travel far in Brazil to experience UNESCO World Heritage Sites and picture-postcard beaches! Just three hours south of Rio, the colonial port Paraty harks back to Brazilā€™s golden age where gorgeous, white-washed townhouses and ornate churches are framed against distant mountains shrouded in Atlantic Rainforest. In the bay, idyllic islands shimmer on the horizon while the largest, Ilha Grande, provides some of Brazilā€™s most beautiful beaches and a wonderful network of walking trails. This is quintessential Brazil, a heady combination of history and tropical beauty and an ideal end (or start) to any itinerary.

Chapada Diamantina

Table-top mountains, cascading waterfalls and limestone caves are not usually what you what associate with Brazil yet 4 hours inland from Salvador, the Chapada Diamantina provides exactly that! Based around the small colonial town of Lencois, the Chapada Diamantina is a wonderful destination for walkers offering huge mountain panoramas and lonely mining villages. Hike the trails, bathe under the falls or snorkel through crystal-clear pools, the Chapada Dimantina offers a striking contrast to the palm-fringed beaches of Bahia.

Lencois Maranhenses

Deep in Brazilā€™s remote northeast coast, Lencois Maranhenses is a spellbinding patchwork of fresh-water lagoons amidst towering, wind-sculpted sand dunes. From above, the views are simply mesmerising and stretch off towards the horizon. This is Brazilā€™s hinterland, a captivating area accessible only by an adventurous 4×4 jeep ride across the sand from the colonial town of Sao Luis. For those who make the journey, the rewards more than eclipse the travel time. Sink into the turquoise pools, visit the remote mangrove forests of the Parnaiba Delta and finish at the buzzing resort of Jericoacoara, this is true off-the-beaten-track Brazil! Pantanal

There is no better place than the Pantanal to experience South Americaā€™s magnificent wildlife! The vast seasonal wetlands boast close to 1000 species of birds and 300 species of mammals and count everything from giant anteaters, hyacinth macaws and giant river otters to tapirs, capybara and jabiru storks. Even if it is the elusive jaguar you want, the Pantanal offers specialist itineraries that come close to guaranteeing that iconic photo. Better still, the Pantanal combines beautifully with the limestone caves and rivers of Bonito as well as the table-mountains of the Chapada dos Guimaraes and even the southern fringes of the Amazon Rainforest.

Ilha Boipeba

Brazil boasts 7Ā½ thousand kilometres of glorious coastline and the full array of golden beaches, desert islands and luxurious resorts to choose from. Oasis favourites range from Ilha Grande, Fernando de Noronha and Trancoso (depending who you speak to!) yet in our eyes, the island Ilha Boipeba is very special. There are no fancy hotels just simple, locally-run pousada guesthouses nestled along the coast and the odd tractor for traffic. Yet, this is part of its charm, a throwback to Bahian life where large, palm-fringed beaches lie empty and time drifts by uncluttered by the modern world. There is still plenty to do ā€“ you can hike, ride, swim or snorkel in the tidal pools ā€“ but rather than a throbbing nightlife, expect a quiet, a picture-postcard island lapped by warm, crystal-clear waters. Wind-down bliss!
