Small is beautiful or in Ecuador’s case, truly breathtaking! A tiny country on the shoulder of South America, Ecuador boasts 15% of the world’s birdlife and has more biodiversity per square kilometre than any other country on earth. Historic, colonial haciendas sit in the shadow of smouldering volcanoes. Towering, snow-capped Andean mountains drop though lush cloudforest into the steamy Amazon. On the Pacific coast, old growth forest tumbles onto picture-postcard beaches and off shore, the natural wonderland of the Galapagos Islands continues to amaze and inspire alike.
Occupied by the Inca in the 15th century, the country’s rich heritage is still visible today. Ancient temples give a glimpse into the Ecuador’s pre-history while Quito and Cuenca showcase some of the finest colonial, architecture in the Americas. Colourful markets, such as at Otavalo, offer a unique insight into Andean culture, while the adventure capital of Baños offers exciting hiking, riding and rafting.
There is a fabulous mix of accommodation from beautiful boutique hotels to historic haciendas. Best of all, Ecuador is small and manageable, a true joy in South America! Volcanoes, cloud-forest and coast are all within a 2 hour drive of Quito while a thirty minute hopper flight opens up the Amazon rainforest. And then for the dazzling highlight, take a flight over to the Galapagos….
