Ecuador - DESTINATIONS & HOTELS

Cotopaxi National Park

Hacienda La Cienega

$$$

Character Boutique, Historic Hotel

An impressive tree-lined avenue leads up to the 300 year-old Hacienda La Cienega, one of Ecuador’s oldest colonial estates set on the edge of the Cotopaxi National Park.

Dating back to the 17th century, the mansion has hosted a heady range of important dignitaries throughout its colourful history from the explorer Alexander Humboldt to the South American liberator himself, Simon Bolivar.

The hacienda retains its traditional character with grand, colonial architecture encircling a splendid courtyard awash with tropical trees and plants. Sweeping, white-washed corridors lead off to a maze of high ceilinged rooms, decorated with antique furniture and colonial artwork.

There are 28 traditional en-suite rooms and suites. The decor is in keeping with the property’s overall tone with wooden beds frames, elegant period fittings and most with a fireplace. Standard rooms are on the cosy side while the suites (pictured) are a more spacious.

The restaurant serves a good mix of national and international dishes and includes a hearty three course set menu.

All activities from walking, riding and bird-watching in the national park to visits to the surrounding indian villages can be arranged locally.

Steeped in history amidst magnificent grounds, Hacienda la Cienega is an excellent budget option close to the national park. Its former grandeur is admittedly jaded, the rooms rather dated yet the historic ambiance and elegant setting more than make up for its shortcomings.

This is just one of the hotels that we recommend in this area. If your favourite is not featured just let your consultant know - we will be happy to book it for you!
