There are so many highlights in this fascinating country that it is impossible to list them all here. Our travel consultants will discuss your interests and be able to put a specific itinerary together for you, but below are a few must seeās!
The Amazon Rainforest and the Huaorani
Ecuadorās rainforest teems with life, colour and sound and offers some of the finest jungle experiences in all of South America. Picturesque lodges line the Napo River and Yasuni National Park and provide the perfect base to immerse yourself in the dense canopy. Yet to understand the forest through the eyes of the indigenous tribes, look no further than the Huaorani Ecolodge. The Huaorani tribe who resisted contact until the 1960ās have finally opened up to the outside world and created a unique tented camp deep in the forest. Remote and rustic certainly but truly fascinating!
The Devilās Nose Train
The remnants of Ecuadorās glorious āGreat Southern Railwayā, the āDevilās Nose Trainā is an engineering masterpiece. Dubbed the āmost difficult train in the worldā, the train drops hundreds of metres down a vertical cliff wall via a spectacular series of switchbacks (the so-called Devilās Nose). Sadly the surrounding track has been destroyed yet plans are afoot to revitalise the entire track from Quito to Guayaquil – watch this space!
The Haciendas
What better way to understand the rich heritage and culture of Ecuador than by staying in a historic 16th-century hacienda? Such estates ring the northern highlands around the colourful market town of Otavalo and offer guests a heady taste of traditional colonial grandeur. Head south of Quito to the breathtaking Cotopaxi National Park for something quite special. Under the shadow of the awe-inspiring Volcano Cotopaxi, the Hacienda San Agustin de Callo sits on the ruin of an ancient Inca palace and melds the ancient masonry into its very walls.
