Modes of transport

Roads

Roads are excellent in Equatorial Guinea. There are tolls on all roads outside of the cities that cost CFA500 per vehicle.

Boat

The Elobey Ferry between the New Port in Malabo and Bata plies the waters once a week.

Trains

There is no railway in Equatorial Guinea.

Taxis

In Rio Muni there is an interprovincial bus service, Kassav Express. However, shared taxis are more comfortable and easier to use.

Flying

Flying is the best option between Malabo and the mainland. There are several national carriers with offices in Malabo and Bata.

 

 

Health Precautions

A yellow fever certificate is required. Malaria is a high risk throughout the year. Immunisation is recommended for hepatitis A and B as well as for tetanus. Bilharzia and rabies are present. Immunisation is recommended for polio.

 

 

Food and Drink

Equatorial Guinea has a wealth of tropical fruit, vegetables such as cassava, plantains and yams, and a great deal of fish. Most restaurants in Malabo and Bata offer European, particularly Spanish, or Lebanese dishes. There are a few that have African dishes on the menu, such as the local dish of chicken with a creamy peanut sauce, Senegalese yassa. There are few restaurants elsewhere.

 

Money

The currency of Equatorial Guinea is the CFA franc. Only some businesses and banks in the country accept cheques or credit/debit cards, so it is advisable to use cash where possible. If you would like to transfer money to the country, it is recommended that you seek advice from the Embassy on the best method.

Electrical outlets in Equatorial Guinea usually supply electricity at between 220 and 240 volts, 50Hz. European two-pin plugs with round or flat pins are standard.

Ethiopian Airlines fly three times a week to Malabo via Singapore and Addis Ababa.

 

Tipping

Small tips for good service are appreciated and often expected in Equatorial Guinea. Service charges are not usually included in restaurants and tips of about 10 percent for waitrons are customary. Taxi fares should be rounded up if the service is good.
