A peaceful 16th century town, Orchha is located four hours drive from Khajuraho on the banks of the Betwa River. The town was founded in 1531 and was the capital of a powerful Rajput Kingdom until Tikamgarh was announced as the new capital in 1783.

Orchha is set amongst a beautiful complex of well conserved palaces and temples with the grand Ram Raja Temple taking centre stage, here at Oasis we recommend visiting the temple in the evening where devotees gather to sing a rousing chorus. The complex features three 17th century palaces – The Jehangir Mahal, The Raj Mahal and the smaller Raj Praveen Mahal. The palaces are located on a fortified island easily reached by crossing a small bridge over the Betwa River.
