The desert city of Bikaner is located in the sand dunes to the north of Rajasthan and is home to the spectacular Junagarh Fort which was built in 1588 by Raja Rai Singh. Bikanerā€™s forts, palaces and temples are magnificent creations in red and yellow sandstone and are living manifestations of the cityā€™s rich historical and architectural legacy.

Affectionately called the “camel country”, Bikaner is renowned for breeding the best riding camels in the world and is a great spot from which to enjoy a camel safari. Just to the south of the city is the intriguing 17th century Karni Mata or “Rat Temple” where hundreds of rats and mice are fed and honoured in the belief that they are reincarnated saints, certainly not for the squeamish!

Bikaner makes an excellent stopping off point for those venturing out to Jaisalmer or for those who want to get off the beaten track.
