Japan - Oasis Highlights

There are so many highlights in this fascinating country that it is impossible to list them all here. Our travel consultants will discuss your interests and be able to put a specific itinerary together for you, but below are a few must seeā€™s!

Tokyo

Pulsating neon, soaring skyscrapers, madding crowds, latest trends and fashions all await you in the worldā€™s most populous metropolitan area. The sheer scale of the city can be overpowering for first-timers. Still, after a couple of days exploring, you’ll discover the peaceful side of traditional Japan, such as tea ceremonies and blossom-filled serene Zen gardens. Itā€™s just one of those ā€œworld citiesā€ that will unravel itself to you when you go with the flow! From skyscraper-dotted Shinjuku and the manic nightlife of Roppongi to the ancient incense-filled temples in Asakusa and the green oases of Hamarikyu-en Garden ā€“ Tokyo is a frivolous mix of modern contemporary existence and ancient etiquette, slick futuristic gadgets and a gentle and orderly population.

Osaka

Osaka is Japanā€™s second biggest city and the country’s industrial heartland. What Osaka lacks in sightseeing draw cards, it makes up for with its flamboyance, fun-loving people and fantastic food. The unique Japanese youth culture is evident all around, with colourful video game parlours and karaoke centres lining the streets. Osaka also rivals Tokyo for the title of fashion centre of Japan, especially in the rather strange American village (America-mura). It is a crowded city with huge department stores and many bars and restaurants as well as a great place to pick up the latest gadgets and electronic goods.

Kyoto

Itā€™s fair to say that when you think of Japan: geisha disappearing into hidden doorways, Zen pebble gardens, bamboo groves and incense filled serene temples, your imagination will be realised in Kyoto! It is the epicentre of traditional culture in Japan and with 17 UNESCO World Heritage sites, more than 1600 Buddhist temples and over 400 Shinto shrines, Kyoto is also one of the worldā€™s most culturally rich cities. Fair comparisons can be made with Paris, London and Rome as one of those must see world cities and it is also fair to say that it really must be included on any visit to Japan, whether for the first time visitor or even if you have been to Japan countless times. There is always something new to discover in Kyoto!

matsumoto

The picturesque castle town of Matsumoto is nestled between the Japanese Alps and Utsukushigahara Heights (meaning “beautiful plateau”). Matsumoto boasts a surprisingly metropolitan atmosphere while maintaining historical sites and traditions. The streets are clean, and the people are friendly. The region is famous for delicious apples and soba (buckwheat noodles) and is the birthplace of the contemporary artist Yayoi Kusama and the Suzuki music method.
