Laos - Oasis Highlights

The landlocked communist country of Laos probably offers visitors the biggest surprise of all the Asian nations. The people are probably the friendliest and they are definitely the most laid back! Although years behind their neighbours in terms of sophistication Laos offers a great all-round travel experience!

Luang Prabang

This UNESCO World Heritage listed town is truly one of the undiscovered gems of Asia and a firm favourite with Oasis staff and clients alike. If you only spend 3 days here we think you will leave wondering why you didnā€™t stay longer! The sleepy atmosphere of this riverside town is simply fabulous.

River journey along the Mekong, between Chiang Saen and Luang Prabang

If time allows, the slow river journey down the Mekong from Northern Thailand to Luang Prabang is one of the regions most special journeys. Watching the early morning mists lift of this great river to reveal the stunning mountain scenery is just magical, as is the final destination!

4000 Islands

In the deep south, on the Cambodian border is the region known as the 4000 islands. Only discovered by the most intrepid backpackers until a few years ago, the beautiful spot is the perfect place to relax and wind down to life at Laotian pace. There are huge waterfalls and uninhabited river islands to explore and you might even catch a glimpse of the rare Irrawaddy dolphins!

Plain of Jars

Over 300 mysterious huge stone jars, whose origins are still to this day a point of debate, can be found strewn across the high grassy plain in this most eerie of spots. Myths and legends abound as to their origins. The area is accessed by a short flight from Vientiane or an arduous but rewarding road journey. We call this a highlight with a caveat, the internal flights here are not the most reliable nd not for the feint hearted (we would take them), and the road journey is long and not overly interesting. The actual jars themselves are fascinating though!

Vang Vieng

This sleepy town was once just the stop off point for backpackers travelling overland between Vientiane and Luang Prabang but in recent years, following the addition of a few better quality accommodation options and the locals realising that they can improve their lot by catering to tourists, has become one of the key destinations in the country. The countryside is stunning, and there are gentle walking trails and caves to explore as well as river trips in tubes, canoes or rafts.
