Deir el Qalaa is 700m high and is sited on the Eastern side of Beirut city at the entrance of Beit Meri.

The church named after St. John the Baptist, was built in 1750 on the remains of an ancient Roman temple. After the first church was destroyed, another was constructed in 1768, and a third in the twentieth century.
