Lesotho - Oasis Highlights

There are so many highlights in this fascinating country that it is impossible to list them all here. Our travel consultants will discuss your interests and be able to put a specific itinerary together for you, but below are a few must seeā€™s!

Afriski

Afriski is one of only two ski resorts in southern Africa, located 3222m above sea level in the Maluti Mountains, operating in Southern Africa near the northern border of Lesotho and South Africa. The resort is a 4.5-hour drive from Johannesburg or Pretoria via the steep tarred Moteng and Mahlasela pass. The resort can accommodate about 250 people and offers a 1km ski slope, plus a beginner’s slope and operates during the winter months (Juneā€“August). The New Oxbow Lodge is nearby, and Afri Ski rents skis and boots. There are three slopes and two ski lifts, while several alternative activities are available in the summer months.

Sehlabathebe National Park

Situated in the Drakensberg escarpment is the Sehlabathebe National Park, established in 1970. A breathtaking undisturbed area of its own beauty of clear rivers running through the park. Rocks of different formations, San paintings, unique wildflowers, a bird sanctuary, rock pools and a waterfall. This is also a place where the rare minnow fish is found. Rheebuck oribi, mongoose, wild cats, jackals and baboons frequent the area. This park is the nationally designated nature reserve in Lesotho and comprises 6 500 hectares at an average elevation of 2,400 m. The park is ideal for hiking, bird-watching and contains unusual rock formations and alpine flora.

Bokong Nature Reserve

At more than 3000 meters above sea level, the reserve is one of the highest nature reserves in Africa. An impressive visitorsā€™ centre has been developed on the edge of a 100m cliff. The visitorsā€™ centre (open between 08:00 and 17:00 daily) at the Bokong Nature Reserve is perched on the edge of a 100m cliff and was built to educate visitors to the kingdom about the ecology, geological and palaeontological history of the Lesotho Highlands. There are some outstanding views across the highlands. However, the highlight of the reserve is the Lepaqoa Waterfall, which freezes in winter to form a column of ice.
