The Limpopo National Park was born when the status of that wildlife utilisation area in Gaza Province, was changed from a hunting concession to a protected area. It forms part of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park, a 35,000 km² peace park, which includes the Kruger National Park (South Africa), the Gonarezhou National Park (Zimbabwe), the Manjinji Pan Sanctuary and Malipati Safari Area in Zimbabwe, the Sengwe communal land in Zimbabwe and the Makuleke region in South Africa.
The new park has been developed with fencing and anti-poaching units. In 2001 the translocation of a large number of animals from the Kruger National Park to this new park had got underway.
