Modes of transport

Roads

Transport in Niue takes place on a road network, and via an (international) airport and a seaport. A ring road around the island’s coast is the major route and roads cross the central plateau linking Alofi to the villages of Lakepa, Liku and Hakupu on the opposite coast.

Public transport

Niue is not a country of public transport. There are no public buses, no trains, no ferry services, no domestic flights.

Car Rentals

There are several well established rental car companies with safe, well-maintained vehicles for hire. You will need a local driverā€™s license from the Police Department – these are possibly the best souvenirs ever! You can also guarantee that while getting around you will make a few local friends. Please note that motorcycles cannot be hired on Niue unless a valid motorbike license is presented.

Taxis

Niue has one taxi service called ā€œThe Taxiā€. The eight-seater can be booked over the phone, taking you wherever you want to go on the island. Rates are per kilometre travelled and can be paid by cash or EFTPOS, i.e. bank card.

 

Health Precautions

The Niue Foou Hospital is located at Kaimiti, Alofi. Clinic Hours Mon – Thursday 8am – 4pm, Fri 9am – 10am & 7pm – 8pm, Sat & Sun & Public Holidays 9am – 10am & 7pm ā€“ 8pm ph 4100. Emergency phone 999. Charges for health services will apply to all visitors.

Safe drinking water is from natural spring and rainwater but there is bottled water available if preferred.

 

 

Food and Drink

Your most memorable meals on Niue will revolve around the freshest fish, creamy coconut milk, pawpaw (papaya) and Pasifika starchy vegetables, like taro, yams and cassava. The island grows as much as it can, including hydroponic salad ingredients, and the local vanilla products and honey are legendary.

 

 

Money

The New Zealand dollar is legal tender in Niue. Most businesses have EFTPOS and accept NZ debit cards, Mastercard and Visa. Some EFTPOS facility providers will allow you to withdraw cash. There are no foreign exchange services available in Niue. Niue does not have ATM’s on the island, but you can withdraw extra cash from Kiwibank in Alofi.

 

 

Time Zone

Niue is 11 hours behind Greenwich meantime.

 

 

Visas

Not required by bona fide tourists staying less than 30 days with return or onward tickets and sufficient funds for length of stay.

Electricity voltage is 240 AC/50 cycle, the same three-pin plugs as used in New Zealand and Australia.

 

 

Getting there (stopovers)

Air New Zealand services Niue with twice-weekly flights from Auckland, New Zealand, with an approximate flight time of just over 3 hours. Niueā€™s international Airport, Hanan (IUE), is less than 5 minutes from the main town Alofi.
