The classic Inca Trail is one of the world’s great treks and for decades, the face of South American adventure. Breathtakingly beautiful, the four day trail follows an age-old Inca pathway that winds through the heart of the magnificent Vilcabamba range. Arriving at the sun-gate at dawn, the captivating lost city of Machu Picchu is illuminated by the first rays of sunlight, a mesmerising moment that captures the spiritual essence of the Inca. And yet, this is but the tip of the iceberg in Peru. The “Inca Trail” is but one of a vast network of stone pathways that linked the Inca Empire to distant palaces and forts set deep within the Vilcabamba.
For avid trekkers, the remote outposts of Choquequirao and Espiritu Pampa are unmissable and involve challenging hikes into the deep Andes following in the footsteps of the very conquistadors themselves. Closer to Cusco, beautiful sites such as Huchuy Qosqo and Pisac ruins are overlooked by most visitors and reached in shorter yet breathtaking day walks. Mountain biking has opened up other trails and possibilities. Leaving the tour buses behind, you can cycle into the countryside to visit the enigmatic ruins of Maras and dazzling salt-flats of Moray. Or why stop there? Longer rides can drop you from the heights of Lake Titicaca to Cusco or even plunge you into the steamy Amazon. Best of all, it’s all downhill!
Elsewhere, the towering ranges of the Cordillera Blanca and Negra offer some of the finest hiking in South America while the raging rivers of the Urubamba and the magnificent Apurimac deliver world class rafting and kayaking for experts and beginners alike. Paddle through vertical gorges and ancient terraces under the watchful eyes of condors and even thousand year-old cliff-top sarcophagi.
From simple half day adventures to longer hikes and itineraries, Peru has something magical to discover around every corner. Even the smallest twist of activity can make all the difference and at Oasis Travel, we offer a wide range of imaginative excursions to complement any itinerary.
