A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Piton de la Fournaise is the island's most famous natural wonder. Dubbed “le volcan” or The Volcano by locals. Piton de la Fournaise is not a sleeping giant, rather an active geological wonder that erupts with great consistency. This is one of the world's most accessible active volcanoes, and it's possible to hike to the crater's rim. For the less adventurous scenic flights can be taken over the volcano or enjoy the views from the crater’s outer rim right where the road stops.
Located right at the heart of Réunion National Park and only accessible outside of eruption periods, the Fournaise volcano is sure to impress you with its lunar landscapes at Plaine des Sables, thousand-year-old craters, hardened lava and very special flora.
Pas de Bellecombe is the entrance area to the hiking circuits that are popular with hikers; the Nez Coupé de Sainte-Rose path (medium difficulty - 3h30 return trip - 350 metres change in altitude), for its amazing views of the volcano and Indian Ocean; and the Dolomieu balcony (quite difficult - 5h return trip - 500 metres change in altitude), The second route, as unique as it is fascinating, not only will it give you breathtaking panoramic view of the Dolomieu crater from the observation platform, but also offers other places of interest, like the Formica Léo crater and the Rosemont Chapel rock formation, both located within the Fouqué enclosure.
