Located between Adam’s Peak and the Unesco World Heritage Sinharaja Forest Reserve, Ratnapura is best known for its trading of locally found ancient gemstones. There are several gem museums in town that are worth visiting for an insight into the industry, it is also possible to include a visit to one of the several gem mines that are located just out of town. There are not many good quality accommodation options in Ratnapura itself, hence we recommend visiting en-route or staying in nearby Deniyaya – gateway to the Sinharaja forest reserve.
