The Sinharaja forest reserve represents Sri Lanka’s last major area of undisturbed rainforest. Elected as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1989 for its exceptional biodiversity and the fact that it is home to a range of endemic species. The reserve covers 189 sq km offering a haven for nature lovers with superb walking opportunities through the dense virgin forest perfect for viewing the native bird and wildlife which include leopard, sambar, barking deer, wild boar, orange minivets, orioles and babblers to name a few! It is normal for the reserve to experience rain most days, hence it’s advisable to embark on early starts to get as much walking in before the rain starts.
