Jaffna re-opened its doors to tourists in 2010 and offers visitors some fascinating sites and a real insight into Sri Lankaā€™s Tamil culture.

This part of the country is still very much ‘off-the-beaten track’ but is a fantastic place for those looking to get away from the typical tourist trail and see a different side of this amazing country.

Highlights in and around the city include ā€˜Jaffna Fort’, which has undergone an extensive restoration to return it to its former glory. There are also plenty of colourful Hindu temples, the remains of the Royal Palace and the Jaffna Archaeological Museum, which houses some interesting 14th and 15th-century artefacts. Accommodation options in Jaffna are simple yet comfortable; the luxury hotel groups are yet to develop in the area, which isnā€™t necessarily bad!
