The city of Chiang Rai is the gateway point to the famed Golden Triangle region in the far north of the country where the borders of Thailand, Myanmar and Laos all meet. The countryside around the province is green, peaceful and very picturesque. The area is full of exotic and colourful hilltribes, endless trekking opportunities, elephant excursions through the jungle and river rafting whether it be easy grade on bamboo rafts or more advanced white water alternatives.
Chiang Rai itself is not really worth visiting for much more than one night, the night bazaar in Chiang Mai is really much more interesting, but there are accommodation options in the surrounding countryside that make for a very relaxing time or a base from where to explore this rural area.
The town of Chiang Sean, on the confluence of the Ruak and Mekong Rivers is our preferred place near the Golden Triangle to stay. The spectacular hilltop Anantara Resort & Spa just on the edge of town is one of our favourite in hotels in Thailand and the best accommodation option for the beginning of your river trip to Luang Prabang in Laos. Other stunning resorts can also be found in the Chiang Rai countryside such as The Legend and Suanthip Vana Resort.
Having always arranged our own travel I was very wary about trusting an agent.
