Just two and a half hours drive from Chiang Mai on the road to Mae Hong Son is the sleepy paradise hideout of Pai. This tiny northern town is fast becoming a mecca for local artists and musicians. With its burbling streams, immaculately manicured paddy fields, waterfalls and surrounding mountains, shrouded in early morning mists, this tiny town offers great opportunities for escaping the hustle and bustle of modern day Thailand.
The main reason for visiting for most travellers is to use it as a base for extended treks in to the surrounding hilltribe villages, for rafting - both bamboo and white water – and/or for elephant trekking. (Please bear in mind, whilst longer elephant treks are easily organised an hour is usually enough for most people as the ride is as uncomfortable as it is exhilarating!
